How To Help
WHAT WE PROVIDE
- Veterinary Care - First Aid Kit, all medications as well as any needed spay/neuter surgeries, and more! We pay for all veterinary care costs under our official vet: Medlock Animal Hospital
- Supplies - This includes cage, carrier, dry food, bedding, water bottle, hammocks/toys, houses and other supplies as available.
- Specialized Support - We are dedicated to supporting you throughout your foster experience. A seasoned volunteer foster coach will be assigned to you when you receive your first foster rat(s) and we will help with the cage setup and followup care instructions.
- Adoption Assistance - We will find, vet, pre-approve and match interested adopters for your case(s) as well as help host Meet & Greet Adoption appointments and handle all the paperwork if you choose to be a host, otherwise we will transport your case(s) to a foster who is able and willing to host. Your foster rat(s) will appear on our adoption page, social medias and PetFinder listings but we encourage fosters to actively market your foster rat(s) to potential adopters as well.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Live within a reasonable travel distance to and within the city of Atlanta.
- Provide transportation for veterinary visits or emergencies if needed.
- Provide a safe, indoor, temperature-controlled space with adequate food/water, proper housing and care.
- Stay in contact with your Foster Coordinator or the GRR Director!
- Quarantine Fosters - These fosters receive all of our first intake surrendered cases and provide the minimum 6 week isolated quarantine and care needs during that time for a single case. They can choose whether to host Meet & Greet Adoptions from their home if the case is deemed adoptable and may or may not have their case(s) for more than the 6 weeks. These fosters cannot have other rat(s) or vector species (mice, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets) in the home where they will be fostering their case.
- Long-Term Fosters - These fosters receive cases only after they have passed quarantine and health/temperament evaluations and have been deemed adoptable but may have no current adoption interest after 12 weeks in our care. They may or may not choose to host Meet & Greet Adoptions from their home and can opt to also handle any Special Needs case(s) depending on their experience level and capabilities. These fosters can have any number of other pets, rats and other vector species in the home and case(s) from us.
- Special Needs Fosters & The Angel Placement Program - This is for case(s) that have been deemed un-adoptable to the public during their int ital intake quarantine period for a variety of reasons from mild to chronic health issues, advance age/end of life care, extreme under-socialization/shyness issues or fear biting and may require additional socialization or have a specific medical concern that is best cared for in a foster home. These fosters may or may end up keeping their case(s) for the lifetime of the rat(s) [The Angel Placement Program] or till the rat(s) have successfully been rehabilitated and then can be adopted out to select experienced homes. These fosters can also have any number of other pets, rats and other vector species in the home and case(s) from us and may or may not participate in the Meet & Greet Adoptions.
