Welcome to the Georgia Rat Rescue!
We are one of only a handful of dedicated Pet Rat Rescues in the US.
The GA Rat Rescue is a non-profit small animal rescue dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of domestic pet rats in the Southeast USA. Located in and around Atlanta, Georgia, the GRR is made up of a network of fosters, volunteers and staff dedicated to the rescue and rehoming surrendered or abandoned domestic pet rats, to provide education about these wonderful animals as pets in their proper care and to provide quality individual foster home care until they find their forever homes. We preform the recommended quarantine on all incoming cases as well as full and in depth health and temperament evaluations before any rat is put up for adoption. Cases are individually fostered, loved and cared for in private homes with a foster family until they are adopted into their forever homes. All cases are listed now on PetFinder as well as on our Adopt page (more info on how to adopt from us can be found there). We are not a full time shelter or have a centralized physical building for intakes so be patient with us as we work to try to get to all rats that need our help. We are not a rehabilitation center or a sanctuary and cannot help, take in or adopt out wild or non-rat species of animals or pets. We are non-profit rescue that relies solely on public donations and private financial help from our fosters & Admin Staff. Please visit our links above for more information on Adopting, Surrendering, Fostering, Donating, Care Guides and more!
If you would like to help us out even more, feel free to like/comment/follow/share
so we can spread the word to get more attention and help even more ratties!

The Adopt, don't Shop campaign was started to bring public awareness to the plight of homeless animals and to encourage prospective pet owners to adopt from animal shelters and rescue groups as opposed to buying pets from on-line retailers, pet shops or back yard breeders. While there are many amazing reasons to adopt and not shop for your next pet, one of the biggest reasons is to be sure you are not supporting and inadvertently endorsing commercial breeding facilities or un-reputable breeders with poor ethics and breeding practices that contribute to the current overpopulation, the perpetuation of bad genetics/health/temperaments and subsequent heartache. Often animals from these massive "factory style" breeding mills or feeder breeder operations are kept in filthy, deplorable living conditions without proper food, water, veterinary care, or human interaction with little regard for the welfare of the breeding stock or the animals that are produced and dumped on unsuspecting new pet owners. Sadly this is where we get stuck cleaning up the mess! Reputable breeders will never sell their animals to a pet store and will take back their stock if needed.
When you adopt from an animal welfare organization such as The Georgia Rat Rescue, not only do you will free up space for another homeless and needy rats to have the opportunity to find a forever home but you'll get a great companion and a bargain too as our adoption fees are much less than the cost to purchase a pet. All our rats here at the GRR are Behavior & Health evaluated, treated for parasites and come with lifetime support from our experts. Whether you're a brand new potential rat owner or an experienced one looking for a playful partner or a lovable lap buddy, our skilled adoption counselors are here to help you find the right match for your family, rat ownership experience level and home environment. You'll also have a deep satisfaction and pride that you helped save a small life that means the whole world to them. Help spread the word...please Adopt, don't Shop!
