How To Adopt: GRR Adoption Process & Policies
Our Adoption Process updated as of Dec 1st, 2021
Adoption Fees
Adoption fees go towards the ongoing cost of care of the cases the fosters take on and any medical / veterinary costs incurred. They are not set in stone though and may vary depending on the nature of the case itself and how many you are adopting.
Adoption Application
Please fill out our Adoption Application to get started.
VERY IMPORTANT!! We cannot enter into a contractual adoption agreement with anyone under age of 18 so if you are younger than 18 then a parent or guardian must fill out and submit the Application for Adoption. We will need to communicate with the parent or guardian as well throughout the adoption process and attending the Meet & Greets and they will also be asked to sign the adoption contract. Ultimately as the adult of the household they will be held fully responsible for the care of the rats. Being per-approved to adopt and attending a Meet & Greet does not guarantee you an adoption contract and take home, we reserve the right to deny any adoption at any time. All our rats are adopted out as pets only, any applications for animals desired as feeders or breeders will be denied. If you do not currently have rats of your own, rats will be adopted out in same sex pairs minimally (exceptions are of neutered or spayed rats or rats that have shown the inability to live with other rats).
- Step 1: The Adoption Application - Fill out and submit your Adoption Application to [email protected] to get pre-approved to adopt. Instructions on how to fill it out are located on the application page. If you are having trouble finding or filling out the questionnaire, let us know at our email above and we will send it directly to you in an email or as an attached PDF version.
- Step 2: Setting Up the Adoption Appointment - After we receive your completed Adoption Application we will review it and get back to you within 72 hours via email to answer any questions you have and set up an Adoption Appointment at the corresponding foster home for the case you are interested in. If your cases' foster is not allowing public visitations then an alternative public location will be agreed upon between you and the foster. Please note: We do NOT deliver or ship rats!
- Step 3: Adoption HOLDS - Once pre-approved you will be able to put an adoption HOLD on the case you want to adopt in order to secure them for your adoption consideration only with a prepayment of their corresponding adoption fee in full through PayPal (which is fully refundable if for any reason the adoption does not go through). Alternative digital apps are available as well such as Venmo or CASH App upon request only. Payment information is provided at the time of the Adoption Appointment set up. An adoption fee can be paid up to the point of signing the adoption paperwork and we still take cash but we will NOT guarantee to hold a case back for you if an Adoption HOLD is not put down ahead of time.
- Step 4: Adoption Day - This will be a one-on-one meeting between you, the specific case you're interested in and their corresponding GRR foster (and only if needed, an Admin will be present as well or through Zoom). This is non-committal which means you do not have to take home rat(s) that day or adopt from us but it also does not mean you are guaranteed an adoption or placement. If the meeting is successful then paperwork is signed (you must be at least 18 or older to sign) and you will be able to take home your rat(s) immediately following and do not have to schedule a come back pick up date. All rats MUST be picked up from the foster home within two (2) weeks of the set day and time of the originally set Adoption Appointment or the case will go back up for adoption and your deposit will not be refunded. You must bring an appropriate carrier to the Adoption Appointment and to be able to take your rat(s) home the day of or you will be asked to purchase a carrier from us for $25.
- Final Notes: Additional COVID-19 Info - we will be asking everyone in attendance to wear masks or face coverings during Adoption Appointments. If you have a fever, are sick, think you may be sick or have recently been exposed to someone tested positive for coronavirus or has been sick at all, let us know ASAP and do not come! We will reschedule your Adoption Appointment for a safer later date at that time and you will not lose out on adopting from us!
